Publishing of The Book of Mormon & Other Historical Sites

We visited the E.B. Grandin building in the Village of Palmyra, where the Book of Mormon was published.




We learned of the process to print this book and we viewed a couple of the original 5000 copies that were printed in March 1830.




We were able to drive down to Martin Harris' home & farm, outside of Palmyra.

Though Martin Harris' home has long been torn down and a "river stone" exterior, two story home stands in its place, one can still view the farmland, part of which, worth $3000, was put down as guarantee for the payment of the printing of the Book of Mormon.

Martin Harris lost that part of the farm to pay the debt because people didn't have the money to pay for the books.

They sold for $1.25 which was 2 days worth of work. Saints have often given up a lot that the world views as valuable to have something more valuable to their eternal salvation.



While in Palmyra we also visited the Palmyra museum, Phelps store that still has 70 year old eggs (boxed) on their shelves, and one of many other printing offices that had refused to print the Book of Mormon.

At the time of Joseph Smith there were at least 7 newspapers printed by different publishing offices.



We took a moment to visit the 4 different Churches at the crossroads of down town Palmyra (the only one of its kind in America) though none of the buildings are as old as the early 1800s

but one of them did boast that Winston Churchill's maternal grandparents were married there.

We also climbed a small hill behind the 4 churches to see Alvin Smith's grave site.


Further SE we visited the Peter Whitmer farm where the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was organized on the 6th of April 1830.

Another stop was to explore Mendon, where Brigham Young and Heber C Kimball lived. Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball both lived in Vermont and moved just about 30 miles from Palmyra where Joseph Smith was raised and where Missionary work began.

The Lord does prepare those whom He has chosen to serve inspiring them to be where they need to be, when they need to be there. It was at the Tomlinson Inn in Mendon (now a private residence) where Brigham Young first came across the Book of Mormon.

We saw the area where John Young (Brigham Young's father) lived and the barn could have been right there. Note the river stone foundation.



The Tomlinson Corners Cemetery contained the grave site of Brigham Young's first wife and Solomon Kimball (Heber C Kimball's father.


We could not locate the exact place of Brigham Young's home & mill and Heber C Kimballs home and pottery shop.


We also drove up to Sodius Point on Lake Ontario to see the beauty of the country side and to explore the many quaint small towns on western New York.



The citizens in Palmyra and surrounding areas welcome the saints and share their hospitality with those who come to feel a part of Church and local history.
